WANI MATHIAS JUMI
After receiving his bachelor’s degree in Law from Kampala International University Uganda, Jumi attended the Bar at the Law Development Center graduating with a Post-Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice and enrolled as an Advocate of the High Court and superior Courts in South Sudan. He is an Open Society Fellow having won the prestigious Civil Society Leadership Award at Syracuse University in New York graduating with a Master of Laws. Wani holds a Certificate in Human Rights Documentation and Investigation from the Institute for International Criminal Investigations (IICI) at The Hague with focus on War Crimes Investigations. Jumi also holds a Certificate in International Criminal Law from the International Law Institute (ILI) and a Certificate in Conflict Analysis from the United States Institute of Peace (USIP).
Jumi has previously worked for the UNDP, RCN and Norwegian Refugee Council, Sudan Mirror and Radio Nile as well as the Former Secretary General for the South Sudan Law Society. Jumi’s practice focuses on criminal defense in serious death penalty cases and Constitutional matters. Of late, he has incorporated medical malpractice and personal injury cases. Jumi has successfully argued high profile death penalty cases in Wau Western Bahr el-Ghazal on pro bono and a death penalty case of an Australian citizen Mujo Sefa in Juba respectively and secured an acquittal. He has also argued and won a high profile death Penalty Appeal case of John Panther Kuek and the Constitutional Petition of Pagan Amum Okiech before the Supreme Court of South Sudan. He trains Defense Lawyers, Corporations’ Managers, Military Judges and Prosecutors in areas of trial and appellate advocacy, corporate governance and compliance, internal investigation, risks prevention, Military Law & Procedure, National Security and Counterterrorism Law.
Jumi has been involved in providing consultancy services and his previous clients include Tetratech ARD, USAID, Jubek State, OSIEA, SSLS, and Institute for Social Policy & Research, Pact Sudan, IDLO & TRANSTEC SA.
Jumi sits at the Bar Council that regulates and disciplines Advocates in South Sudan. He is a member of South Sudan Bar Association, the South Sudan Law Society and former Student member, New York State Bar Association, New York, USA (2015 – 2016).
